This may sound counterintuitive, but when I saw this video on the CBS news recently I finally decided to start hunting with my older brother. It's something I've struggled with for a long time--the knowledge of how animals are raised, slaughtered, and processed by our meat industry, the way in which we're shielded from the actuality of an animal needing to be killed to provide the nice, thick, shrinkwrapped porterhouse we pick up at the supermarket--and for some reason this video was the proverbial last straw for me. And so I decided that even though I'll find it hard emotionally (in fact, because I'll find it hard emotionally), if I want to keep eating meat (I do) I have an obligation to kill it myself. So I called my brother. He's going to start me with turkeys this April, warning that the first time he shot a deer it affected him so much he almost gave it up.
